WIndrush Compensation Surgeries

Are you a victim of the Windrush Scandal?  If so, you are encouraged to attend Windrush Compensation Surgeries at CACFO, a local charity which you can trust that is providing a safe environment for meetings.

Victims of the Windrush Scandal were subjected any combination of illegal detention, deportation, family separation, job losses, withdrawal of state benefits, zero access to medical treatment, homelessness and so on as a result of their Britishness being wrongfully questioned by the Home Office.

The then Home Secretary publicly promised to right the wrongs of the Windrush Scandal and launched a compensation scheme on 4 April 2019. £200m has been set aside for this as a start. He also set up a Windrush Task Force, which is working with charities and recognised community groups to raise awareness of the scheme around the country.

CACFO is engaged in this programme, working in partnership with Windrush Action, a community group that is seeking fair and just compensation for victims.  We have organised two public meetings so far (14 Sept and 9 Nov 2019).  The Task Force was able to provide information on who may be eligible for compensation, what kind of impacts and losses are covered by the scheme and how to apply.  They also explained how immigration status can be settled.

Given the level of interest in the meetings, CACFO’s Chairman, Councillor Callton Young, has committed to arranging a series of follow up surgeries in Thornton Heath.  The dates will be announced shortly on this website.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Windrush Day Celebration 2020

Croydon is blessed with charities set up by Windrush pioneers.  10 Windrush Charities will be joining together to celebrate Windrush Day on 20 June 2020, following a successful joint event last year attended by about 900 people.

 

 

The 10 Windrush charities below invite you to register to join them for what should be Croydon’s premier Windrush Day event:

• Assoc of Guyanese Nurses & Allied Profs
• Barbados Overseas Nurses Association
• Croydon African Caribbean Family Org
• Croydon Caribbean Credit Union
• Croydon Domino and Social Club
• Croydon Supplementary Education Project
• Croydon Sickle Cell Thalassemia Support Grp
• Friends of the Heart Foundation of Jamaica
• Nurses Association of Jamaica UK

There will be community stalls, live entertainment (music, comedy) and a variety of activities including quizzes and a domino competition.

Celebrations will fall into 3 parts, under a theme of ‘Our pioneers, Our heroes, Our contribution’:

  •  12pm – 3pm: Entertainment and lunch for Windrush Elders (70 years +)
  • 3pm -6pm: Activities and buffet for Young People (11 to 18 years)
  • 6pm – Late: Entertainment/Windrush Dance

The first two parts of the day are free of charge. There is a £10 charge for the evening event, including the Dance.
