Windrush Compensation Event, 9 Nov

A second public event is to take place in Thornton Heath on Saturday 9 November to help residents affected by the Windrush Scandal find out more about claiming compensation.

This event follows a previous public meeting held in the borough last month to inform people of the Windrush Compensation Scheme and forms part of the Home Office’s work to raise awareness of the compensation available via charities and recognised community groups.

Croydon African Caribbean Family Organisation (CACFO) UK is a Thornton Heath charity chaired by Councillor Callton Young, who is working with Windrush Action to secure fair and just compensation for Windrush victims.

Due to the level of local interest at the previous meeting, they have successfully persuaded the Home Office to hold a second meeting in Croydon.

Taking place on Saturday 9 November at CACFO UK on 40 Northwood Road between 11am and 1pm, the session will provide information on who may be eligible for compensation, what kind of impacts and losses are covered by the scheme and how to apply.

Members of the Windrush Taskforce, set up to help those affected by the Windrush Scandal, will also be on hand to answer any questions attendees may have and once again, moral support from community members will be available for any residents who are nervous or unsure.

Councillor Young said: “Hosting a second event in Thornton Heath ward is necessary because our first meeting proved to be the biggest in London so far. It was packed with local residents interested in resolving their immigration status or wanting to apply for compensation as victims of the Windrush Scandal.

“This was unsurprising to me as Thornton Heath is home to the largest number of West Indians of any ward in London. Reaching out to victims and giving them the confidence to come forward via a trusted local partner is a real priority.”

Anyone unable to make the event can contact the Home Office’s dedicated helpline on 0800 678 1925 or email WindrushCompensationScheme@homeoffice.gov.uk. Alternatively find out more at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/windrush-compensation-scheme

Windrush Compensation Event, 14 Sept

A public event is being held in Thornton Heath this weekend, where residents affected by the Windrush Scandal can find out more about claiming compensation. The event is one of a series being held by the Home Office across the UK, working with charities and recognised community groups.

One such charity is CACFO UK which is chaired by Councillor Callton Young, who is working with Windrush Action to secure fair and just compensation for Windrush victims.

Taking place on Saturday 14 September at CACFO UK on 40 Northwood Road between 11am and 1pm, the session will provide information on who may be eligible for compensation, what kind of impacts and losses are covered by the scheme and how to apply.

Members of the Windrush Taskforce, set up to help those affected by the Windrush Scandal, will be on hand to answer any questions attendees may have and moral support from community members will also be available for residents who are nervous or unsure.

Councillor Young said ‘hosting the Home Office in Thornton Heath Ward is particularly important because it has the largest number of West Indians of any Ward in London and, therefore, potential interest in the Windrush Compensation Scheme is likely to be high.

Anyone unable to make the event can contact the Home Office’s dedicated helpline on 0800 678 1925 or email
